If you wish to borrow materials or request them through interlibrary loan, you will need a library card, which you may obtain at window 1 of the circulation desk (UB 2) or at the service desk (UB 1). The first card issued is free of charge. With your library card number and your University Library password you can also use the self-service lending system. As long as you have a place of residence in Baden-Württemberg, Alsace (ZIP codes 67, 68) or northwest Switzerland (postal codes 4, 5), you will receive an ID card that will allow you to check out materials and bring them home, but if you live outside this region, you will only be able to borrow materials for use in the Reading Room in the UB 1.
To register, please bring the completed application form and the following documents:
- Students of the University of Freiburg: Student ID or Unicard
- Students of the PH Freiburg: Student ID card or passport and PH-Card
- Students from other universities and private users: Identity card or passport (and registration confirmation)
- Minors: additional written consent from a parent or legal guardian
Using your UniCard as a Library Card
As holder of a UniCard from the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg you may also use your UniCard as a library card. Your library account number is printed on your card but cannot be used until it has been validated by the University Library.
Once you register your UniCard with the library, it will be activated as a library card.
If you have had a library card in the past, you can unlock the UniCard as a replacement library card. To do this, please bring your current library card.

To use your library account online, all you need is your library account number and the University Library password that you received during registration (a six-digit number). You may change this to a more personalized password at any time after registering your account.
