Part of the current collection is in self-service area - as indicated by the location codes GE, SW, MD, NA, FZ and LB. Materials from the rest of the collections, which are housed in closed stacks, can be requested through the lending system.

In the self-service area (UB 1) you will find the location codes GE, MD, NA, and SW (each containing materials acquired since the year 2000) in the basement, and the location codes FZ and LB I (humanities, economics, law) on the ground floor. These books are available for immediate checkout.
The location code LB is divided among Textbook Collections I and II. Textbook Collection I (humanities) is in the UB 1, and you will find the Textbook Collection II (science/medicine) at Eckerstr. 1 in the Institutsviertel.
Older acquisitions for location codes GE, MD, NA, and SW (68/... to 99/...) are located in the closed stacks and must - along with materials from most other location codes - be requested through the lending system (location code overview).
Information about Self-Service Area
To borrow materials from the self-service area, you should first find the relevant location code in the catalog, then locate the book in the open stacks, and check it out with your library card at the service desk of the UB 1.
If you were not able to find your book in the stacks, you can search the online catalog to find out whether it has already been checked out or if there is a hold on it (in the lending system, click the button "Item status / Request / Place a hold").
If you decide not to borrow a book after retrieving it from the self-service area, please do not put it back on the shelf, but instead just leave the book in one of the red reshelving stations. The risk of books being misshelved is high, and books that are even slightly misshelved are lost books.
