Ten-year anniversary of the new Freiburg University Library building
The University Library Freiburg building was reopened on 21 July 2015, having previously undergone extensive general refurbishment over a period of seven years. Since then, the ‚new‘ university library with its impressive - and at the same time polarising - architecture has shaped the Freiburg townscape. But also its function and use in the digital age has changed with the new building. To mark the tenth anniversary of its reopening, the University Library is presenting the exhibition „Kontinuität und Wandel“ from 31 July to 7 November 2025. It can be seen during the library's opening hours, i.e. daily from 7 a.m. to midnight, in the freely accessible Parlatorium of the University Library.
The exhibition sheds light on the complex planning process and the challenging refurbishment work. It also reflects on how much the working environment, services and tasks of employees have changed in the context of digital transformation. The University Library is now a central place of learning and research with up to 16,000 visits per day. It provides access to a comprehensive range of digital and printed information and offers services for research, study and teaching. On the one hand, the University Library is in the continuity of its long history, on the other hand, the claim of a library for the digital future was already formulated at the beginning of the planning for the new building 20 years ago; it still applies.
The accompanying programme includes a screening of the movie ‚Zeit Räume‘, which documents the ambitious construction project.
