Electronic publishing

The University of Freiburg supports the principles of open access: free access to academic knowledge.

FreiDok plus

You can publish your work on our FreiDok plus research information system in just a few clicks. The raw data behind your research can also be published and archived here. This is frequently required for projects that have been financed using public funds.

Your publications will be permanently archived and made accessible here. They will be listed in our catalogues and shared with the global academic community as a bibliographical reference.

Accepted dissertations and habilitation theses as well as all academic works by Freiburg’s academics can be published here.

Publication format

Users usually publish their work in PDF, ideally PDF/A, format. The latter has been specifically designed for the archiving and long-term preservation of documents. The PDF files must not have any security or encryption settings so that they can be read for decades to come.

Creating a PDF file

These days, most programs can export files to PDF and almost every application can create PDF files. You can find information on how to create PDF files in the “Publishing in PDF format” online tutorial.

Uploading material

Publishing your work is easy – upload your publication to FreiDok plus via your web browser. During this process, please enter the required description data: title, people and institutions involved, keywords, abstract, etc. The publication agreement will be signed electronically. Your publication will go live after a quick check.

Authors can find further information and tips on electronic publications on FreiDok on the FreiDok plus website.

Open Access

The German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) supports the publication of research findings in open access journals within the framework of the “Open-Access Publishing” funding programme.
