E-journals

Read and work online.

Find out more about our extensive range of e-journals. If you are a member of the University of Freiburg, you can access the e-journals from anywhere, otherwise you can access this service from our public computers in the University Library.

Availability of e-journals

The Electronic Journals Library (EZB) is a national directory of journals available online. Most works are uploaded in full-text format. The traffic-light system indicates which texts are available in full.

You can search our Katalog plus using suitable keywords and subject headings. Once the search is complete, you can narrow your results down to the “Magazines/journals/serials” media type. You can also narrow the hits down to electronic resources to display all e-journals. Once you have found an e-journal, you can gain direct access to the full text via the link in the “Holdings info” tab.

You can perform a national search for journals, newspapers and serials in various formats (e.g. print or electronic) in the German Union Catalogue of Serials (ZDB). You can see which libraries hold which journals published in which years, and you can search the ownership stamps by year.

The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) lists specialist journals that have been published online in full under the principles of open access and can be accessed free of charge. Unlike the ZDB and EZB, most of the journals in the directory can be searched at article level in the DOAJ.

Using e-journals

You will find e-journals with a university licence in Katalog plus. These licences are purchased by the University Library. The catalogue also contains e-journals with DFG national licences as well as licence-free resources.

There are four ways to access this service.

For members of the University of Freiburg:

  • At any computer in the university
  • Externally by logging in to the university network via the computer centre’s VPN
  • And/or externally with your university account

For external users with a library card:

  • At certain computers in the foyer in addition to the reading rooms on the first and third floors of the University Library
Terms of use

Writing academic articles is hard work. With this in mind, we respect the copyright ownership and the agreed terms of use. We ask that you do the same. Here is some information about the rules in place and the consequences of violating them.

  • The publishers’ and/or providers’ terms of use must be read before use and observed during use.
  • The e-journals may only be used for private and scientific purposes. Their commercial use and/or sale is not permitted. Passing on content to third parties, e.g. in the form of print-outs or downloads, is forbidden.
  • Only single pages or articles in the e-journals may be saved or printed out. Users must not systematically download or print out huge volumes of data. The use of programs that perform continuous automatic searches, index or download content (e.g. web crawlers, spiders or downloading programs) and any other actions that burden the providers’ systems beyond normal usage are not allowed. Violating these rules could lead to the permanent loss of access to online resources for the individual user or even the entire university, as the providers have the technology to monitor the download rates and volumes.
