Funding Acknowledgements

The financial support of research projects (research funding) or the resulting publications by funding institutions (publication funding) is indicated by the use of so-called funding acknowledgements.

Publication fund of the University of Freiburg

All publications funded from the publication fund of the University of Freiburg must contain a reference to the support received, e.g. "We acknowledge support by the Open Access Publication Fund of the University of Freiburg."

Publications under the DEAL agreements are marked by the publishers Elsevier, Springer Nature and Wiley with the acknowledgement "Open Access funding enabled and organized by Projekt DEAL".

German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG)

According to the guidelines for the use of DFG funds ("Verwendungsrichtlinien"), results from DFG-funded projects must include a reference to the funding in the following form:

"Funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) – project number(s)"

or (in German)

"gefördert durch die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) – Projektnummer(n)".

The project number can be found in the approval letter or the GEPRIS project information system. If a publication refers to more than one project, the project numbers must be separated by a semicolon.

European Union

From 2021, all recipients of EU funding are required to declare that their project has been supported by EU funding. For projects funded under Horizon Europe, this requirement is set out in Article 17 of the funding agreement. The obligation provides for the use of the European flag and the following funding acknowledgement:

"Funded by the European Union"

or in the case of co-funded projects or publications:

"Co-funded by the European Union"

Further information and the required image of the EU flag can be found here.
