The Institute for Frontier Areas of Psychology and Mental Health (IGPP) concentrates on the “systematic and interdisciplinary research of previously insufficiently understood phenomena and anomalies at the frontiers of our knowledge”, including extrasensory perception, altered states of consciousness and psychokinesis. The institution, which was founded in 1950 and funded by a non-profit organisation, is home to a research archive and a specialised library. With its current holdings of around 60,000 volumes and 220 journal subscriptions, it is one of the largest specialised libraries of its kind in Europe. The library received financial support from the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) from 1973 to 2014. From 2011 to 2014, the collections were jointly held by the IGPP and the University Library within the framework of the newly created “Frontier Areas of Psychology and Parapsychology” special subject collection (SSC 5.21).
With the exception of shelf mark groups Frei122-A and Frei122-Z, which can only be viewed on the IGPP’s premises, all of the IGPP’s library holdings are located in the University Library and are listed in Katalog plus in full. Library users can access these holdings in the same way as all other University Library books and take them out on loan if required. Some of the journals are also available online. Please refer to the IGPP’s website for more information on the interesting profile of this unique collection and for details on how to use it.
In 2005, we began digitising certain parts of the IGPP’s journal collection and making them available online. Prior to this, nine journals and a few monographs had been published online.
