E-science / research support

E-science is short for enhanced science. Digital infrastructures for collaborative research.

From project planning to publication

We offer students and academics at the University of Freiburg guidance throughout the entire research cycle with our e-science services: starting with the project planning phase and application process to collecting the research data right through to publishing the research findings.

Publishing research data is increasing in importance. The Alliance of Science Organisations in Germany defines research data as data “that is created as part of scientific projects, e.g. digitisation, studying source material, experiments, measurements, data collection or surveys.” This research data should be safeguarded, re-used and permanently archived under the principles of good scientific practice and open access.

Service

E-science guidance

We are happy to offer guidance when you need solutions for publishing your documents and research data. We can show you what your subject field has to offer and provide information on the legal aspects. We can work together to find the best solution for your research data management and help you from the project planning phase onwards.

Data preparation

When it comes to data preparation, we can support you with the following services:

  • Converting your data to other formats
  • Publishing the data on the FreiDok plus central repository
  • Indexing the content of the data by enhancing it with metadata
  • Making the data searchable using the latest search engine technology
Registering digital object identifiers (DOIs)

The University Library is the university’s central registration agency for digital object identifiers (DOIs) with DataCite. Publications via FreiDok plus are automatically assigned a DOI. If you require a separate DOI structure for your publications, we can also arrange an individual syntax for you.

Services and applications

FreiDok plus Freiburg’s research information system

FreiDok has been the University of Freiburg’s central institutional repository since 1999. It is used to store, manage and easily find research-related information in a central location.

Publishing digital research data is increasingly gaining in importance. Research data can comprise either primary data or secondary analyses, for example. In 2015, we transferred FreiDok to a new technical infrastructure, which we can now also use to archive research data. FreiDok plus enables you to do the following with your documents and research data:

  • Permanently publish them in electronic format (with DOI)
  • Permanently archive and store them
  • Catalogue and describe them using metadata

This enables publications, data and research information to be easily and quickly re-used, validated, found, documented and linked.

Outlook and perspectives

Over the next few years, FreiDok plus will gradually be expanded into Freiburg’s research information system. The aim here is to increase the global visibility of publications and research data as the results of Freiburg-based research. This will be done though the increased exchange of metadata using Integrated Authority Files and standardised interfaces. This method enables academic centres of expertise and documentation centres to make the information on Freiburg’s academic output accessible worldwide in automated processes. To do this, the metadata is linked to various research aspects:

  • Publications
  • Research data
  • Academics and scientists
  • Academic and scientific institutions
  • Research projects
  • Collaborations
  • Conferences
  • Patents
  • Doctorates and postdoctorates
  • Committee work
  • Awards and prizes

Configurable portals for academics, institutes and professorships that extensively document their research activities and findings are created based on this data.

Freikon Digital picture database

Freikon is an interactive digital image and multimedia database. It can be used to:

  • upload and store
  • manage and describe
  • share
  • search and download image material

Members of the university can also search other universities’ image databases. Freikon also enables users to create, view and export presentations with image material.

Open Journal System

Open Journal Systems is the University Library’s technical and organisational support tool for publishing open access journals. OJS illustrates the entire publication process for a journal article, from submitting work, to the peer review process, right through to the editorial phase. Please contact the University Library if you are interested in publishing your own open access journal. We will help you to set up a new journal and work with you to define a workflow so that you can work towards self-publishing the journal.

Virtual research environments

Virtual research environments facilitate transparent digital collaboration in every phase of your project. They support research and teaching using digital methods and infrastructure. You can use and share resources and tools, develop ideas and solve problems in virtual research environments. You can also develop project-related, customised research environments as well as interfaces and connections to external platforms.
