Expansion of open access publication opportunities with Frontiers, Taylor & Francis and Rockefeller University Press

From January 1, 2024, article fees for publications in the journals of the open access publisher Frontiers will be billed centrally. Members of the University of Freiburg can also publish free of charge in the journal portfolio of Taylor & Francis and three journals of Rockefeller University Press.

In accordance with the University of Freiburg’s Open Access Resolution, the University Library promotes Open Access publications in a variety of ways and thus supports free and unhindered access to scholarly research. Through the library's participation in various framework agreements, members of the university who act as corresponding authors have the opportunity to publish articles in open access free of charge or at a discount.

The University of Freiburg's participation in a Germany-wide consortium agreement with the publisher Frontiers will make publishing easier for Freiburg researchers. The fees incurred (Article Processing Charges, APCs) for a publication in the publisher's 229 Open Access journals with a thematic focus on the natural and life sciences will be discounted by 10% across the university and billed centrally via the University Library. The individual invoicing to the authors, which was previously standard procedure, will no longer be necessary.

A second framework agreement was agreed upon with the publishing group Taylor & Francis. Starting on January 1, 2024, open access publishing will be free of charge for members of the university in all of the publisher's hybrid journals ("Open Select Journals"). Corresponding authors affiliated with the university will also not incur any APCs for articles in Taylor & Francis' gold open access journals ("Open Journals"). In addition, the framework agreement ensures reading access to more than 40 Taylor & Francis journals from all academic fields already available in Freiburg.

Based on the new read-and-publish agreement between Rockefeller University Press and the University of Freiburg members of the university can also publish free of charge in the "Journal of Cell Biology" (JCB), "Journal of Experimental Medicine" (JEM) and "Journal of General Physiology" (JGP). The articles are published in open access under the CC BY license and are therefore freely accessible and reusable worldwide immediately after publication.
