As of January 1, 2026, the maximum funding limit for support from the publication fund of the University of Freiburg will no longer apply. Publication costs for articles in dedicated open access journals (gold open access journals) will be fully pre-financed by the University Library from this date. Some faculties may pass on part of the costs to the authors later on. If in doubt, please contact your faculty for clarification. Additional fees, such as page or colour charges, are not funded centrally.
The open access publication of articles in journals that are not covered by Projekt DEAL or other framework agreements can be funded from the publication fund of the University of Freiburg. According to the guidelines of the university's Executive Board (Rectorate) and the German Research Foundation, the following conditions must be met:
Persons eligible to apply for funding
- Only articles by university members who as (submitting/responsible) corresponding authors are responsible for covering any publication fees are eligible for funding.
- An ORCiD ID must be provided.
- The publication fund can only support articles for which no alternative funding options (such as publication grants) are available.
Publications eligible for funding
- Only articles in dedicated open access journals (gold open access journals) that apply rigorous procedures of quality control recognized in the respective subject can be funded. The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) provides an exemplary overview of such journals.
- Articles in subscription journals based on the hybrid open access model and articles in so-called mirror journals (open access offshoots of subscription journals) are not eligible for funding.
- Publication costs (Article Processing Charges, APCs) are fully pre-financed by the University Library. Some faculties may pass on part of the APCs to the authors later on. If in doubt, please contact your faculty for clarification.
- Only open access publication costs are eligible for funding. Other costs, such as page or colour charges, are excluded from funding.
- The publication must appear under a free licence (preferably Creative Commons Attribution/CC BY). See here for further information on open content licences.
- The authors or editors only transfer non-exclusive rights of use to the publisher.
- The rights to images and other material provided by third parties have been cleared beforehand.
Funding acknowledgement and documentation
- The publication must contain a reference to the support received from the publication fund of the University of Freiburg, e.g. "We acknowledge support by the Open Access Publication Fund of the University of Freiburg." See here for information on requirements by other funding organizations.
- All funded publications are indexed and made available from the institutional repository FreiDok plus.
